The Certified Organic Blueberries, come fresh from our southern states. Blueberries are small and round berries that first appear green, to then turn into a deep shade of dusty blue once they ripen. They develop a soft, hazy white coating on the skins' surface, known as the bloom, and it's a natural waterproofing which helps protect the berries from the sun and other natural elements.
Blueberries have a sweet and woodsy flavour with an acidity that can vary depending upon growing conditions. Long sunny days and warm temperatures develop a higher sugar content, while cooler temperatures and shorter days with limited sunlight increase acidity.
Blueberries can be eaten freshly picked or incorporated, raw or cooked, into a variety of recipes. They can also be available frozen, perfect for adding in to your morning smoothie.
Fresh Australian blueberries are available from July to April with the peak availability in October to February.
Full of iron, phosphorous, calcium, magnesium, manganese, zinc, vitamin K and low in calories, Blueberries are great for bone structure and strength. Packed with flavonoids, they are a powerful source of antioxidants.
Choose firm, dry, well-rounded, smooth-skinned berries that are bright blue with a slightly frosted look. Reddish blueberries aren't ripe and won't ripen once picked, but you can use them in cooking.
Avoid berries that are soft, shrivelled, or have any sign of mould.
You can keep your delicious Blueberries fresh in the fridge, inside a breathable container and enjoy them within 10 days. You don't need to wash them until you're ready to eat them.
Look among your Blueberries and remove those with any sign of mould or those looking shrivelled. One mouldy blueberry could spoil the whole bunch.
