Yummy and nutritious Certified Organic Pears. Pears are a bell-shaped sweet and juicy fruit, that can be eaten fresh when ripe, they taste great when they're cool and don't forget the skin, as it has lots of nutrients. Pears can be cooked to make jams, jellies, pies, added raw to salads, dried, or made in to a delicious juice.
Pears, interestingly, ripen from the inside out making them one of the few fruits that are actually better picked when still hard.
Pears are at their peak season during autumn and winter.
Due to their high content of flavonoids, pears are associated with the improvement of insulin sensitivity, making it a great option in the prevention of type 2 diabetes, additionally, pears are a very good source of dietary fibre and a good source of copper, vitamin C and K. They are fat and calorie free.
Unlike other fruits, pears ripen from the inside out so by the time they are soft on the outside, the inside flesh may be overripe and mealy.
Ripe pears feel firm when softly squeezed and gives a bit when the top is pressed, but please, be gentle, you don't want to harm them, they bruise easily.
Unripe Pears can be stored on your bench top, away from heat and sunlight, preferably in a cool and dry place. You can leave them there for about a week.
You can also place them in the fridge when ripe, they taste awesome when cold! They'll be good for up to a couple of months.
If unripe and you want to accelerate the ripening process, you can put them in a paper bag for one to three days or just put them near other fruits that release ethylene gas, it will help to accelerate the ripening process.
Discard any damaged pears as just one bad one can ruin the rest.
