June Seasonal Update

Jun 01, 2024

Yayyyy! Winter is finally here!

It might sound confusing given we live at a location that celebrates summer and sunshine, but winter is our favourite season. It's when all the farms come alive and the growing season really kicks off. You've probably noticed it in your home garden too. Bugs are less, weeds are slower, and all those yummy veggies and fruit tress are full!

Heres a snapshot of what to expect this month in terms of whats in season:

Fruit

In case you haven't noticed, we are in full swing of citrus season from our friends at Gayndah. That means lots of vitamin C rich sweet juicy Mandarins, Oranges, Lemons, Lemonades, Tangello's.... and hopefully this month we will see some Blood Oranges!

Apples and Pears are also in fresh supply from our friend Denis and from our friends a bit further south too :) Papaya is also making a comeback in terms of supply and quality and we've seen the first flush of Rhubarb this week from our Victorian growers.

Local Strawberry season is off to a slow start due to the rains earlier in the autumn. Fingers crossed these come into full supply now its a bit cooler and the sun is shining again (hopefully I don't jinx it!).

Avocado is also in season locally and we've been loving the yummy Fuerte variety in the lead up to Hass season. remember these arrive fresh so often take up to 10 days to ripen.

Veggies

Phew! There is so much available and more on its way! Brassica season has also been a bit slow to start due to the rains but is starting to become abundant meaning we should see a good supply and price for Broccoli, Cauliflower and Cabbages and Celery!

Carrots and Potatoes keep on coming, although Eggplant, Tomato and Capsicum have slowed right down so we expect intermittent supply of these.

Zucchini, Cucumber and Beans are bouncing back after their mid season transition and we're super excited to get these locally :)

Pumpkin is available in a few varieties, as is a good supply of yummy Sweet Potatoes. Beetroot is a favourite for tray bakes and Beet Kvass too. Leafy greens are abundant including Kale, Silverbeet, Lettuce, Salad, Choi, Leeks and more.

As always say hello at Markets and to our friendly drivers out on deliveries, and thanks for supporting local farmers!
